Chino Answers Call from Kansas Town in Need

October 28, 2021 - Residents of a little town on the prairie can thank the good memory of the guy who runs the local power plant and the character of a good Samaritan 1,000 miles away for the smooth, reliable flow of electricity to their homes.

It’s a story that starts with two strangers and ends up connecting the 8,722 residents of Chanute, Kansas, with the 650 or so employees of New Mexico’s Chino operations and for that matter, the other 28,000 or so worldwide employees of Freeport-McMoRan.

National Indonesian Games Showcase PTFI-financed Sports Complex

October 4, 2021 - Though they were delayed and very nearly canceled, the 20th Indonesian National Games are very much on in the house that Freeport built.

The Mimika Sports Complex, a glittering $33 million event venue and training facility funded by PT Freeport Indonesia, is one of four showcases for the Papua National Sports Week (PON) which is being held for the first time in the province of Papua. Check out this video of the MSC.

El Abra Engineer Receives Outstanding Woman in Mining Award

October 1, 2021 - María Eugenia Morales’ contributions to El Abra and her efforts to support the careers of her female colleagues have been recognized with the mining industry’s highest honor.

Morales, a Civil Industry Engineer at El Abra, recently received Chile’s Outstanding Woman in Mining 2021 award. This distinction honors the recipient’s experience and track record in her position on site, and it highlights the active role she has played in advancing female talent in positions historically filled by men.

Chino Operations Wins Sentinels of Safety Award

September 21, 2021 - The National Mining Association has honored Chino operations with a Sentinels of Safety Award for outstanding achievement in mine safety in 2019 and 2020.

Chino, which won the award for the Large Group Metal / Non-metal Mill category, was recognized at a ceremony held atMINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2021in Las Vegas on September 14. The association awards Sentinels of Safety annually to the nation’s safest mines, measured by a minimum of 4,000 injury-free hours. Chino won its last Sentinels of Safety award in 1969.

Papuan Highlands Bridges Connect Villagers to Critical Services

August 31, 2021 - While the idea of building a couple of bridges may sound humdrum from a Lowlanders’ perspective, the two suspension bridges PTFI recently finished in the Papuan Highlands are nothing less than life-changing for native villagers who now have safe passage over two of the area’s more treacherous river crossings.

That’s especially important considering the area is home to the “Wettest Place on Earth” at Mile Post 50 where 480 inches of rain a year drop into topography that descends 16,000-foot peaks to sea level over a span of just 55 miles.
