Freeport-McMoRan Helps Discover a New Frog Species in Papua

July 22, 2021 - PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI), in partnership with The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the South Australian Museum, discovered a new frog species in Mimika Regency, Papua, Indonesia.

Named Litoria lubisi, this species of large green tree frog is in the same family as Litoria infratrenata. The discovery of the new species was officially published in the international journal Zootaxa.

July 20, 2021 - When the worst of twin wildfires approached the doorstep of Globe-Miami in Central Arizona and the company’s Miami operations on June 6, Freeport-McMoRan had one unified response to calls for help from firefighters, agencies, community members and employees: “Whatever you need.”

For Arizona State Forestry Battalion Chief Burrell Teague, it was Freeport delivering on a Type I Fire Engine and crew from Morenci and water trucks from Miami ops at a time when the fires had closed highway access and severely limited the ability to bring in firefighting resources. 

Moving Forward: Bagdad Begins Rebuild from Spur Fire

July 16, 2021 - Nearly seven weeks after the 150-acre Spur Fire ripped through Bagdad and reduced multiple homes to rubble, Freeport-McMoRan is moving swiftly to replace company homes lost in the blaze to expedite recovery efforts, even as scars remain fresh for many.

Stories of pandemonium around the May 27 event are many: residents frantically banging on doors to evacuate neighbors as flames barreled down on their own homes and company water tankers dousing homes to keep flames at bay – all occurring as firefighters and air tankers battled the blaze from the ground and sky.

July 6, 2021 - Students at the Diocesano School of Huelva in Spain recently learned about the responsible production of copper from Atlantic Copper employees in the first educational outreach in more than a year due to COVID-19.

Previously, more than 1,000 people, including schoolchildren of all ages, visited company operations each year to learn about the different stages of copper production as well as about the company’s environmental and social initiatives. During the pandemic, educational activities were suspended for safety reasons.
