Sierrita Fights Back Against Buffelgrass

June 28, 2021 - Sierrita employees are fighting the good fight against buffelgrass – an invasive species that not only threatens other native plants but also creates a fire hazard in the already dry Arizona Sonoran Desert.

Recently, 11 Freeport-McMoRan employees from the Tucson, Ariz., area mine and nine community volunteers spent hours removing buffelgrass, using shovels and pick axes to dig out the plants from the roots.

This year’s winning photos of an American Marten in Colorado and a Eurasian Spoonbill in Spain didn’t happen on a whim – they took patience, advance planning and a little luck.

Into the dark recesses of Grasberg Block Cave, the spunky explorer bobs and rolls, illuminating and livestreaming its journey.  

The voyage is all about understanding and monitoring how the undercut levels of PT Freeport Indonesia’s massive underground mine are breaking up and advancing, and – more importantly – it’s about protecting everyone who works there. 

Project Co-funded by El Abra Fortifies Village Against Floods

May 4, 2021 - With help from Freeport-McMoRan's El Abra operations, a small Chilean village now has a better defense against the scale of flood disaster that nearly devastated it just two years ago. 

As part of its ongoing support to the local community, El Abra worked with Conchi Viejo to install specially engineered protective barriers that resist fast-moving, fast-rising stormwater and greatly reduce erosion and other damage.
