Around the Company in Pictures: PTFI’s Grasberg Mine Sees Rare Snowfall
February 3, 2026 - While snow at most Freeport operations is a sight to behold, at some locations, significant snowfall is as rare as it is breathtaking. In late January, a storm at PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg site gave the mine its first considerable snowfall in more than 15 years – and a unique opportunity.
In the last week of January, a sudden temperature drop to the low 20s brought with it unexpected snow that blanketed the signs, structures and slopes of Grasberg. At a site known for its more tropical conditions, the phenomenon was quickly documented by employees and members of the mountain community, some of whom were seeing it for the first time. Despite the mine’s elevation – around 14,000 feet above sea level – substantial accumulation remains uncommon.
Though operations continued, safe production remained a top priority for PTFI as work activities were adjusted, special procedures for extreme weather were activated, and additional safety measures were put into place.
